Chrome OS will revolutionize all operating systems
Google will offer, by the last quarter of 2010, its own operating system. The Nouvelobs.com returns to this new competitor to Windows with its creator, Sundar Pichai, product manager at Google.
The Internet giant, Google is poised to offer its own operating system. Announced for the last quarter of 2010, this new competitor to Windows is based on an improved Web browser. The Nouvelobs.com asked Sundar Pichai, product manager at Google responsible for Chrome OS, which comes on the project.
Nouvel Observateur: What is the origin of Silver OS?
Sundar Pichai: Everything starts with Chrome, the browser that we launched last September. Speed, security and simplicity are at the heart of the browser. Chrome has met with great success, with now more than 40 million users. The next step was Chrome OS: An operating system that follows the browser. We started from the observation that people spend more time surfing on their browser, and they highly rated small fast computers and dedicated internet as netbooks. We therefore wanted to propose a new computer model completely different, based on the browser. From my side, I found that people are not updates, long and complicated, but they install much software on their computers. So, keeping his machine in good condition takes time and energy. For proof, as soon as I returned to my parents in India, I spent my time to “clean” computers. I then thought of a model that could be much better. Was born the concept of Chrome OS. First point: it is very fast and starts in 7 seconds. Then it is easy to use, the user has no programs to install, no software to manage the system continues to date only, etc.. Finally, special attention was paid to safety.
NO: Do you think that Google may provide something better than Microsoft?
S. Pichai: More than most, I would say alternative. We have a really different, a different model of computer and free. Chrome OS designed especially for mobile users who spend much time online. The system also has the advantage of being decentralized, nothing is stored on the machine. If someone loses or breaks his computer, he can just find another via the Internet. Chrome OS is accessible from any machine.
NO: What are the real new features?
S. Pichai: With Chrome OS functionality is the web. The question is how to use the web, how to get started on the web. We want the fastest, easiest and safest way possible. I also think that the possibility of change computers without losing anything, is a function that makes the difference. Afterwards, since the browser can do everything: read books, watch videos and photos, do word processing, etc.. We are working to make all these uses accessible even when offline.
NO: Is Google offering legitimate software?
S. Pichai: Yes, I think. Today, people use the web all the time. Chrome OS may revolutionize all operating systems, like Gmail did with webmail. Before Gmail, e-mails were recovered from the machines, but all could be lost if the crash. When Gmail was launched, but it stopped [with online storage, Ed]. Even if the user did not go through Google, it was better for everyone. This will be the same with Chrome OS. The new benefit all users, improvements win all systems.
NO: Chrome OS will he one day be installed on other computers that netbooks?
S. Pichai: Yes of course, eventually it will be installed on desktops or laptops. For now, we ensure that Chrome OS works fine on netbooks. Nothing is frozen and the system will be optimized for other computers.
NO: When Silver OS will he launched in France?
S. Pichai: A proposal will be released next year in France and in 42 languages. The first netbooks equipped with Chrome OS will be available fourth quarter 2010.
