iPhone: Nokia files a complaint against Apple

Nokia, the Finnish manufacturer of mobile phones announced that they have filed a complaint in the United States against Apple. According to Nokia, Apple’s iPhone violates patents the firm Finnish standard GSM, UMTS and WLAN.

Ten patents are covered by this complaint, filed with the Federal Court of Delaware. They are related to wireless coverage, the encoding of voice, security and encryption. Nokia says that the Apple iPhone infringes these patents since the release of the first model in 2007.

“The basic principle in the industry of mobile telephony is that companies that contribute to technological development to define standards create intellectual property that other companies must compensate,” said IIkka Rahnasto, Vice President for Intellectual Property Nokia. “Apple is also required to follow this principle. In refusing to accept appropriate conditions on the intellectual property of Nokia, Apple is trying to profit without consideration for the efforts of Nokia in terms of innovation,” he added.

In a statement, the Finnish phone maker said it has invested 40 billion euros in research and development during the last twenty years, and 40 companies have signed licensing agreements for use of Nokia technology.
